Drake University’s Lindsay Whorton has been named a Rhodes Scholar, the university’s first in 82 years.

Whorton, of Independence, Mo., graduates from Drake in December with majors in English and education.

Whorton, who also played basketball for the Bulldogs, is one of 32 men and women from across the United States to win the prestigious scholarships for study at England’s Oxford University. The winners’ names were announced on Sunday.

According to the Rhodes Scholar Web site, Whorton has worked on a South Dakota Indian reservation and is interested in a career in teaching.

The scholarships provide two or three years of study. The students will enter Oxford University next October.
