For Rhodes scholar Megan Engel, the work has just begun.
Although the 23-year-old University of Alberta student just finished a gruelling application process that involved submitting an essay, six references, as well as attending a cocktail party and a roundtable interview, she’s already thinking ahead to what the award will help her accomplish.
“Now I’ve actually achieved these honours, I have a huge responsibility to my fellow man. I’m happy and satisfied, but driven to work harder than I ever have before,” she said.
The Rhodes Scholarship, which provides students with full funding to the program of their choice at Oxford University in the U.K., is widely considered one of the most prestigious academic awards in the world.
Engel was among two other winners from the prairie provinces and 11 in Canada.
