Calla Glavin: Rhodes Scholar reflects on Birmingham roots

Calla Glavin isn’t what one would expect in a typical West Point cadet.
Neither physically imposing nor stoic, Glavin represents the new Army – an organization that now more than ever recognizes that the most important trait of a soldier is the ability to get the job done.
“The Army is a true meritocracy,” said Glavin, a 2010 Birmingham Seaholm graduate who was recently named Michigan’s only Rhodes Scholar for 2014. “If you can hang with the guys... that is what you are going to be judged on. Gender, race, religion, those things don’t matter. What matters is the ability to complete the mission at or above the standard.
